The local chapter of Blue Star Mothers is looking to recruit new members to join in supporting the Armed Forces service members, veterans and families of fallen heroes.

The group meets the first Monday of each month at a location to be determined and the third Wednesday of each month at the VFW to pack boxes for service people serving out of the country. The group needs more names and addresses for those serving.

Melanie Palmer from the Durango Botanical Society will be the guest speaker at the Kiwanis Club of Durango meeting at noon Thursday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2800 Main Ave.

Citizen science series to focus on forests

The San Juan Headwaters Forest Health Partnership and Mountain Studies Institute will host a citizen science series that offers opportunities for people to participate in educational, outdoor activities that will increase their understanding of what’s happening in local forests.

The group will meet at 7 a.m. Saturday at the Pagosa Springs Public Library, 811 S. 8th St. in Pagosa Springs. The day will begin with a “Birds of the Forest Tour” with local representatives from the Weminuche Audubon Society. This will be followed by trainings and opportunities to engage hands-on in forest health science. A regional expert will talk about how insects and invasive plants influence forest health, wildfire risk and other concerns related to the longevity of forestlands.

Ken Beegles, retired Colorado Water Engineer, will share his insights into water use in a water-shortage area such as La Plata County with Daybreak Rotarians at 7 a.m. Wednesday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.
