Local historian John Porco will talk about the former Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad and the line that ran through what is now Navajo Reservoir and Arboles, Tiffany and Allison at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Navajo State Park Visitors’ Center, 1526 County Road 982, Arboles.
The highlight of the evening will be rare and unusual photos, both of the railroad in its heyday and of its current historic remnants. Vestiges of this empire are scattered throughout Navajo State Park.

Marvel Grange to host ice cream social
The Marvel Grange will host a homemade ice cream social at 3 p.m. Saturday at 8097 County Road 100 in Hesperus.
The social will honor veterans. Participants should bring a batch of homemade ice cream to share. Beverages will be provided. If the weather is uncooperative, the event will take place at the Marvel Grange Hall, 217 County Road 133A in Marvel.

The Durango Education Center will offer computer classes from Monday to Aug. 14.

Spaghetti dinner to help youth baseball
The Pine River Youth Baseball 9-10 All-Stars will host a spaghetti dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Bayfield Lions Club Hall on Church Street in Bayfield.
The team is raising money to travel to next week’s state Little League tournament in Grand Junction. The Bayfield team defeated All-Star teams from Ignacio, Cortez and Durango to win its district Little League tournament. The cost is $5 per plate or $20 per family. Beer will be available by donation. Checks can be sent to Pine River Youth Baseball, P.O. Box 532, Bayfield, CO 81122.
