Gray Wolves Ski Club dues deadline Aug. 15
All current and prospective Gray Wolves Ski Club members 50 years and older are reminded that membership dues for the 2014-2015 season must be received no later than Aug. 15 to qualify for the discount for the Wolf Creek Ski Area season pass. Membership forms can be downloaded at www.graywolfskiclub.com.
Membership fees are $15 for a single and $25 per couple.
Some other advantages of club membership are: Gray Wolves season-pass holders receive their tickets at the Base Camp Lodge and do not have to wait in line at the ticket office, free fountain drinks at the Base Camp lodge on Tuesdays, subsidized lunches for several social events at the ski area, discounted ski lessons and more.
Lecture series to be held Cortez
Shanna Diederichs will speak about her work excavating an ancestral Puebloan village in the Indian Camp Ranch subdivision northwest of Cortez at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, 23390 Road K in Cortez, as part of the Four Corners Lecture Series.
Diederichs’ presentation is called “Big House on the Prairie: Results of Excavations on the Basketmaker Communities Project and the Dillard Site Great Kiva.”
Diederichs is the supervisory field archaeologist for Crow Canyon’s Basketmaker Communities Project, including excavations at the Dillard site, which will be featured on the PBS series “Time Team America.” The episode, “The Lost Pueblo Village,” will air on Rocky Mountain PBS or New Mexico’s KNME at 8 p.m. Aug. 26.
All Four Corners Lecture Series presentations are free to the public.

Wild-mushroom class to be held Sunday
Chris Ricci of Majesty Mushrooms will lead a one-hour foray for local wild mushrooms and help identify mushrooms. Kids are welcome. Bring rain gear, boots and a basket. Meet at 3 p.m. Sunday at Durango Natural Foods, 575 East Eighth Ave. The caravan leaves at 3:20 p.m.

Webcast on radon control offered
A free webcast called “Incorporation of Radon Control Techniques in New Homes” will be offered from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pine River Valley Bank, 1701 Main Ave., Durango. You may attend the group gathering or view the webcast from your own computer. Be connected by 12:45 p.m.
Topics will include: application to various foundation types, passive vs. active systems, installation details, alternatives within Appendix F of the IRC, postconstruction testing/verification and Colorado specific.
The program is sponsored by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

Rose Society’s show to be held during fair
The Four Corners Rose Society’s 40th annual rose show, “A Rose is a Rose,” will be held in conjunction with the horticultural section of the La Plata County Fair, Aug. 6-10.
Rose-show schedules outlining show requirements and classifications are available at the Colorado State University Extension Office at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.
Rose-show and horticultural-section entries will be accepted from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday in the La Plata Room at the fairgrounds.
