Mancos Valley Resources will host an applied Grant Writing Workshop from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Mancos Valley Resources is a community support organization serving the Mancos Valley since 1995. The workshop will be conducted by professional social sciences program developer, evaluator and grant consultant, Clara A. Martinez. A light lunch will be served. The cost is $40. The workshop will consist of addressing the common elements and selection criteria of private and public sector grant making.

Bayfield library to hold card class

The Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive, will host a free card-making event as it celebrates World Card Making Day between 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The library will have the supplies and a free postage stamp for each participant.

Household hazardous waste to be collected

The city of Durango and La Plata County will host the 2014 Household Hazardous Waste Event from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

Residents of the city and La Plata County may dispose of hazardous and hard-to-dispose household products. Household wastes are considered hazardous if they: burn easily; corrode or irritate the skin; have the potential to generate heat or explode; and are poisonous to humans and animals. Latex-based paint will not be accepted. All other paint types including oil-based paint and varnishes will be accepted. Other prohibitive items are explosives and electronics.

These fees are associated with disposal of household hazardous waste: 5-gallon container or smaller $5; 20 gallons $10; 40 gallons $20; 80 gallons $40; and a full pickup bed is $120. Cash and checks are the only forms of payment to be accepted. Commercial quantities of hazardous waste will be accepted Friday.

Apple Days Festival to be held Sunday

The Growing Partners of Southwest Colorado will present the seventh annual Home Grown Apple Days Festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Buckley Park, on Main Avenue between 12th and 13th streets.

This free family event will include: Free apple tastings, different types of apple varieties for sale from the CSU Orchard in Yellow Jacket, apple pressing, kid activities and crafts, live local music, local food vendors, educational information, and a pie-eating contest.
