Video-relay system available to deaf
Southwest Center for Independence has obtained a Sorenson “ntouch” PC with a video-relay system that enables the deaf and hard-of-hearing community to communicate with both deaf and hearing family, friends or business contacts using video-relay service.
This free service lets people place and receive calls with a professional American Sign Language interpreter via a videophone and a high-speed Internet connection. A deaf caller in the center’s office can see another deaf person who also has a video phone, so they can sign to each other directly.
If calling a hearing person’s number, an ASL interpreter appears on the TV to relay the conversation between the deaf person in the office and the hearing person on the other end of the line. Deaf people may visit 3273 Main Ave., No. 23 to use the device or make an appointment by calling 259-1672.
