An informative meeting about the adverse impacts the King II coal mine in Hesperus will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School, 11274 Colorado Highway 140, Hesperus.
GCC Energy will make a presentation about the impact 240 coal trucks per day is having on the community, and it plans to address problems.
Elks Lodge to offer food during parade
Durango Elks Lodge 507 will host “The Cogglers Café” from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday in the newly renovated hall at the Ninth Street entrance of the Elks’ building, 901 East Second Ave.
The Elks will serve Italian Beef Grinder Sandwiches and Cup o’ Soup dinners. All ages are welcome. Adult meals are $8 and $6 for children younger than 10. Prizes will be offered for the best Steampunk outfit present at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. A cash bar and food to-go also will be available. All proceeds will be used for Durango Elks’ charitable endeavors.
Daybreak Rotary Club to meet Wednesday
Daybreak Rotarians Julie Westendorf, Bob Conrad and Rodney Cross will speak to the Durango Daybreak Rotary Club at 7 a.m. Wednesday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.
The group joined members of Daybreak’s sister club, Rotary Club Campestre of Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, and participated in three projects: delivering gifts to children in an underprivileged school; visiting an orphanage for severely disabled children, which Daybreak Rotarians helped build; and touring a gang-intervention project of the Juarez Club. Speakers will share their stories. The public is invited.

City Span to show governor’s address
City Span, Durango Government TV, will air Gov. John Hickenlooper’s address to the state through Wednesday.
The “State of the State” will air at these times:
11:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday.
11:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Booty shakers sought for Snowdown
The second annual Snowdown ZUMBA Booty-Shaking Contest will take place after the Snowdown parade from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Friday at the Smiley Building Theater, 1309 East Third Ave.
Contestants will dance freestyle on stage in heats of five people. First- through third-place winners will receive prizes, including a Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad train ride, a night at the Strater Hotel and restaurant certificates. The top male and female contestant will win the Golden Thong. The event is free for spectators.
