San Juan Mountains Association in partnership with Canyons of the Ancients National Monument is recruiting volunteer Trail Information Specialists at Sand Canyon in Cortez.
Volunteers will be trained in interacting with people at the Sand Canyon and East Rock areas of the monument. Specifically, volunteers will be hiking, biking or horseback riding the Sand Canyon Trail area during high-use times of the year and informing the public about Leave No Trace ethics, as well as monument regulations. Volunteers also will be educated in the biological and cultural resources that make the monument unique and how to avoid disturbing them. Uniforms, nametags and training are provided.

Organic land management to be discussed
The city of Durango will host a public presentation with Chip Osborne of Osborne Organics on Organic Land Management Choices and Challenges at 5 p.m. Monday at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.
Osborne Organics was hired by the city to develop the Organically Managed Lands Program. The current program involves seven city park sites including Folsom Park, Schneider Park, Pioneer Park, Riverfront Park, Iris Park, Needham Park and Fanto Park. The presentation is free.

AARP driver safety classes offered
A Smart Driver Safety class, defensive driving class sponsored by the AARP Driver Safety Program, will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Pine Room at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.
Registration will take place at 8:15 a.m. The class is a nationwide Department of Motor Vehicles accredited, defensive driving program that highlights recognizing and compensating for naturally occurring age-related changes. The certificate is good for three years. Auto-insurance discounts apply for drivers age 55 and older for the three years. The cost for AARP members is $15 and $20 for nonmembers and includes all class materials.

Native American beadwork workshop to be held
Southern Ute Cultural Center and Museum Will offer a Beadwork 101 workshop from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday in the craft room of the museum, 77 County Road 517.
This will be an introduction to Native American beadwork. There will be a fee of $20 for the workshops. The workshop will be the first in a series titled Native Workshop Fridays, a series of Native American crafts workshops that will be held throughout the year.
