John L. Anderson, a member of the Colorado Commission on Higher Education, will speak to the Rotary Club of Durango at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave.
He will present the challenges for higher education in Colorado and plans underway to address them, using Fort Lewis College as an example where possible. After a career with IBM, Anderson was chief executive officer of New American Schools, a firm that raised private funds for investing in approaches for improving public schools. He was appointed to the commission by Gov. John Hickenlooper in December 2013. Visitors are welcome.

32nd Street turn lane to be closed Monday
City of Durango crews will close the westbound, right-turn lane of East 32nd Street just before North Main Avenue, starting Monday for approximately four days. The right-turn lane provides access for northbound travel on U.S. Highway 550. The construction will focus on repairs to a utility access.
The closure through Thursday also will include the sidewalk on the north side of East 32nd Street at North Main Avenue. During the closure, all pedestrian and bicycle access around the project area will be detoured. The public is asked to seek alternative routes, and motorists should expect delays in the area.
For more information, call Mike Somsen at 375-4839.
