Friends of the Durango Public Library will hold the Friends’ Spring Book Sale from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the library, 1900 East Third Ave.

Books will be on sale at $1.50 per pound. Friends members, and people who wish to become a Friend, are invited to shop at the Early Bird Sale from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, following the group’s annual meeting at 5:30 p.m.

Botanical society to offer docent training

The Durango Botanical Society will offer Spring Docent Training from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 28 and April 11 at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

Docents will learn about the Library Demonstration Gardens and plants that grow well in the area, meet other growers and gardeners, and help with garden tours, plants workshops, bulb sales and local nursery special events. All materials are free and pre-registration is required.

Mindfulness course to be offered

Mindfulness teacher, counselor and former Buddhist monk John (Chophel) Bruna will lead a Mindful Life Program’s Foundations Course in Mindfulness from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 28 and 29 at the Inhabit Center, 1970 East Third Ave., Suite 110.

Bruna travels the U.S. and Canada teaching workshops and leading retreats designed to help people lead happier lives. The mindfulness course combines meditation training with practical, accessible and universal skills integrating four key areas of mindfulness: concentration, wisdom, values and an open heart. The program consists of lecture, meditation, small group discussion, journaling and short video presentations.

‘Pay 2 Play’ to be screened March 30

The Durango Friends Meeting and the Durango Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will present a screening of “Pay 2 Play” at 7 p.m. March 30 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango, 419 San Juan Drive.

This is a film about the corrupting influence of money in politics and what people can do to take their power back. A community discussion will follow the screening. “Pay 2 Play” follows filmmaker John Ennis’ quest to find a way out from under the pay-to-play system, defined by Ennis as the cycle where politicians reward their donors with larger sums from the public treasury.

Ignacio library to offer watercolor class

The Ignacio Community Library, 470 Goddard Ave., will offer a beginning watercolor class from 10 a.m. to noon April 2, 9, 16 and 23.

All the materials will be furnished. There is a $10 materials fee.

Volunteers of America seeking volunteers

Volunteers of America are seeking volunteers for the five programs it offers in Southwest Colorado.

The Southwest Safehouse provides residential shelter for women and children fleeing domestic violence and sexual assault. The Durango Community Shelter offers residential shelter for children, women and men experiencing homelessness. The Back Home Program for Veterans and the Veteran Transitional Housing Program offers housing, case management and financial assistance to veterans recovering from homelessness. Cedar View Apartments offer affordable housing for seniors. Many volunteer opportunities are available to people in the community who are the most vulnerable.

Euchre tournament to be held Tuesday

An Euchre Tournament will take place Tuesday at the Lost Dog Bar & Lounge, 1150 Main Ave.

Registration will take place at 5 p.m. followed by the tournament. There will be a $5 entry fee, which will be used for prize money. The tournament will be double elimination and partners will be randomly drawn.
