On April 1, driveway standards went into effect for new driveway development in unincorporated portions of La Plata County.
The driveway standards were approved by the La Plata County Board of County Commissioners on Dec. 9, 2014. New driveway development in unincorporated La Plata County (outside of city or town limits) requires a permit, issued by the County Engineering Department, for the length of the driveway from the adjacent road to the dwelling unit. The intent of the driveway standard is to provide safe and adequate access for emergency responders to protect the health, safety and welfare of the community. Information and requirements for obtaining a permit are available at http://bit.ly/LPCDriveway.

Kerry Thompson, assistant professor of anthropology and applied indigenous studies at Northern Arizona University, will present “It’s About Time that We (Archaeologists) Recognize the Federal Indian Law Context of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.” Greater understanding of the act within the context of federal Indian law would assist archaeologists in the areas of tribal collaboration and consultation. Dialogue that brings tribes and archaeologists together may be improved through the education of archaeologists in the history of federal Indian law and policy. The meeting is open to the public.
