The Durango Business Improvement District announces a call for entries for the Stars & Stripes Parade set for 6 p.m. July 4 on Main Avenue.
Businesses, nonprofit organizations, schools, neighborhoods and more are encouraged to participate. Entry is free. Parade entries can be motorized, on foot, include animals, music and more. City ordinances preclude any objects being thrown to the crowd.
A parade entry form is available at www.downtowndurango.org and must be submitted for review before an entry’s acceptance. Entries will be evaluated on patriotism, the fun factor and family appropriateness. Controversial themes or messages are not allowed.
Winning entries will be selected by an independent panel of judges after the parade.

‘The Power of Heart’ to show at Himalayan
Agape of Durango will host a film screening of “The Power of Heart” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Himalayan Kitchen, 992 Main Ave.
Director of “The Secret,” Drew Heriot, brings the life-changing film about the power of the heart.
All proceeds will benefit the Karma & Jyamu Bhotia Foundation, a nonprofit that will forward the money to help the people of Nepal rebuild homes and lives. Donations will be accepted.
Meet local authors at the Lost Dog
A local authors event will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Lost Dog Bar & Lounge, 1150 Main Ave.
This will be a chance to meet local writers, browse their books and enjoy free appetizers. Guests are welcome.
Stillwater will sing for High Noon Rotary
The Durango High Noon Rotary Club will meet from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.
The cost of lunch is $15. The club will hear a musical performance by the children of the Stillwater Foundation.
Healthy Hounds will wash your dog
Healthy Hounds staff will wash dogs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 21738 U.S. Highway 160.
All proceeds will benefit Lisa Parker’s Puppies foster and adoption program. Dogs will receive a warm bath, towel dry and 5-minute blow-dry. Prices are $15 to $25 depending on size and fluffiness of dog. Nail clips are $5. Service will be first-come, first-served.

Methodist examine surviving suicide
In light of the suicide of Miller Middle School eighth-grader Sawyer Ward, the First United Methodist Church, 2917 Aspen Drive, will have a special message at its worship services this week on “Surviving the Grief and Trauma of Suicide.”
The message will be focused around comfort, care and prevention. The message will take a look at how the scriptures speak to people in moments such as these. The church also will have Stephen Ministers and a list of grief counselors available after all of its services. Services take place at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m. Sunday. Saturday’s service and the 8 and 9:30 a.m. Sunday services have contemporary music led by a band. Worship at 11 a.m. Sunday is traditional format with hymns and a choir. All services are casual and comfortable dress.
