The Veterans of Foreign Wars will host its annual Buddy Poppy Days from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at these locations:

May 21-23 at Walmart, 1155 S. Camino del Rio.

May 23 at Albertsons, 311 W. College Drive, south City Market, 6 Town Plaza, North City Market, 3130 Main Ave., and Kroegers Ace Hardware, 8 Town Plaza.

Donations will benefit disabled and needy veterans and their families and local community projects. VFW members will distribute poppies and accept donations.

Board of Adjustment seeks new member

The La Plata County Board of County Commissioners is seeking an interested person to serve on the Board of Adjustment.

This board hears and decides requests for variances and special exemptions with regard to La Plata County’s Land Use System of special exceptions and appeals. Meetings are on an as needed basis. General knowledge of the county’s adopted Land Use Code is preferred. This position is advisory and is not monetarily compensated.

Conserving, managing our scarce water

“Water Conservation and Irrigation” will be the next topic in a free series of talks at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Animas Valley Grange Hall, 7271 County Road 203.

This topic will be presented by John Ott, general manager of the Animas Water Co. Ott has a degree in geology, was on the board of the Animas Consolidated Ditch for many years and is part of the families at James Ranch. His talk will be about conserving and managing scarce water resources for the area.

The grange is sponsoring a series of informative talks by various local experts, and the talks will occur once each month.

Independent Living group to talk business

The Colorado Statewide Independent Living Council will meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Homewood Suites by Hilton, 15 Girard St.

The business portion of the meeting will begin at 9 a.m. A public comment portion will take place from 1 to 1:20 p.m.

Sign-language interpreters will be available.

The council also accepts written comments relevant to independent living services in Colorado. These may be delivered at the meeting or emailed to [email protected].
