Rotary Club hears Nepal status update
Karma Bhotia will speak on Nepal’s earthquake situation to the Rotary Club of Durango at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave.
Bhotia had traveled to Kathmandu and was visiting family near the border in India when the April 25 earthquake struck. Several days later, he returned to Kathmandu by vehicle over damaged roads to fly back to Durango. Even after the second May 12 earthquake, his family is safe, but the country is devastated.
Karma and Jyamu Bhotia, owners of the Himalayan Kitchen, established the Karma and Jyamu Bhotia Foundation to help improve education and living conditions in their home region. Currently, they are channeling funds where they can best be used in the country for earthquake relief, and they are grateful for the public’s participation in a successful multi-restaurant fundraising event in Durango. Visitors are welcome.

Motorists reminded to watch for wildlife
The Colorado Department of Transportation, Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Parks and Wildlife and many nongovernment organizations remind motorists that wildlife-vehicle collisions are high this time of year.
Wildlife-vehicle collisions happen year-round. However, there always is an increase during migration seasons – typically November for fall and May for the spring – and the majority occur during the hours between dusk and dawn.
For more information, visit www.coloradodot.info/programs/environmental/wildlife/wildlifeonthemove/data-and-charts.
The next CDOT project to mitigate wildlife-vehicle collisions in La Plata County will begin after the Labor Day holiday. Located on U.S. Highway 160 about five miles east of the Colorado Highway 172 junction, the project will involve shoulder widening, fence installation and construction of a wildlife underpass.
