The lap pool at the Durango Community Recreation Center will close to the public at 6 p.m. Friday and remain closed until 5:30 a.m. Monday for the Durango Swim Team Summer Invitational.
The leisure pool, spa and splash pad will remain open during the weekend.

Hour Exchange to host time-banking class
Hour Exchange La Plata will host a multi-purpose gathering from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive in Bayfield.

Senior center offers technology workshops
The Durango/La Plata Senior Center will offer these workshops with Jon Cordalis, the Computer Tutor, from 9 a.m. to noon:
Technology 101 will take place Tuesday. The class will look at tablet and smartphone technology, wireless Internet basics, streaming video content, Internet competency, uses of digital photos, Skype/Facebook and more.
Technology 102 will take place Thursday. Participants will explore current technology with tips on email, the Internet, eCommerce, digital photos and safe computing.
iPad Tips and Tricks will take place June 30. Participants will explore: Apps and related issues, keyboarding, settings, Internet, photos, troubleshooting of common device issues and more. People must understand basic operations and should bring their device to class and know the Apple ID and password.

Southwest Studies’ lectures continue
The Center of Southwest Studies will continue its 2015 summer lecture series, “Imagining the West,” with journalist and art critic Judith Reynolds’ talk, “Searching for the Sublime in Painting and Photography” at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the center’s Lyceum Room No. 120.
Over the last 20 years, Reynolds has reported on the visual arts, drama and music for The Durango Herald. In addition, she has taught art-history courses at Fort Lewis College and co-authored the first biography of Gustaf Nordenskiold, the first scientist to catalog the ruins of Mesa Verde. Reynolds will frame her presentation in the summer series with Ansel Adams’s images of the American West.
All summertime lectures are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on specific Wednesdays, and they are free to the public.

Rotary Club to go hiking on Muir Trail
The High Noon Rotary Club will meet from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.
Chris Blackshear will present “Hiking the John Muir Trail.” The cost for lunch is $15.
Get a hands-on look at composting
A hands-on workshop on composting will take place at 11 a.m. June 27 at the Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive.
Taught by the library’s groundskeeper, Brian White, the class focuses on the basics of great composting and will be held in the Pine River Living Library, adjacent to the library building.

Silverton to host free Night at the Museum
The San Juan County Historical Society will host a free Night at the Museum from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at 1557 Greene St., Silverton.
The museum, housed in the old county jail, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The complex now includes the adjacent Mining Heritage Center, comprised of the old Caledonia Boarding House. Exhibits include replica mine tunnels and workings. Admission is free. Donations will be accepted, and refreshments will be served. Several local authors will be on hand for a book signing.
