Paving underway on U.S. Highway 160

The Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor Oldcastle Southwest Group Inc. began a project in May to improve the surface of U.S. Highway 160 between Hesperus and Mancos Hill – about a 9-mile stretch of road.

The contractor will begin paving operations Thursday. The work is expected to last through mid- to late-October.

With paving underway, vehicle traffic will be shifted onto the shoulder to enable two-way travel to flow unimpeded. Therefore, cyclists will have no shoulder on which to ride, and they must travel in the same lanes with vehicles. The speed limit is reduced to 40 mph.

The work will resurface the highway from mile point 62 at the Montezuma/La Plata county line east to mile point 71.1, about two miles west of Colorado Highway 140 in Hesperus. Travel will be impacted from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday. No weekend work is anticipated at this time.

Drivers should anticipate some single-lane, alternating traffic when only two lanes are present; traffic should flow in both directions where three lanes exist.

Chip-seal underway on U.S. Highway 550

The Colorado Department of Transportation will begin a preventative maintenance project on U.S. Highway 550 – southbound lanes only – from the New Mexico state line north to mile marker 4. The work will begin Monday and will continue through July 30.

A chip-seal will be performed. This is a preventative maintenance measure designed to extend the life of a highway that is in good or fair condition. Drivers will encounter a lowered speed limit and a single-lane closure for southbound U.S. Highway 550. Drivers are urged to drive with caution and to maintain a safe following distance on freshly chip-sealed surfaces to avoid chipped windshields.
