Sunnyside library to close Aug. 3-6

The Sunnyside Branch of the Durango Public Library, at Sunnyside Elementary School, will close for maintenance Aug. 3-6.

The branch is expected to reopen Aug. 10.

Archaeology society addresses agriculture

As part of the Four Corners Lecture Series, the Hisatsinom Chapter of the Colorado Archaeology Society will present R. Kyle Bocinsky at 7 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Sunflower Theatre, 8 E. Main St., Cortez.

Bocinsky will give a talk called “Can Pueblo Corn Save Ethiopian Farms? Deploying 1,400 Years of Agricultural Knowledge in Service of the Future.”

He will discuss how a deep-time approach to crop science is revealing the adaptedness of Pueblo agricultural practice, and why Pueblo corn – along with traditional varieties of many other crops – are likely to be essential to preventing the worst impacts of global climate change.

Homebuyer class tackles many issues

The Regional Housing Alliance of La Plata County will offer a free monthly Homebuyer Education Class.

The class is an eight-hour program designed to help participants purchase and own a home. Topics will include: buyer readiness, budget/financial management, credit reports and scoring, mortgage lending, working with a real estate agent, homeowner’s insurance, home inspections, the closing process, home maintenance and foreclosure prevention.

The class is made possible by contributions from local professionals such as loan officers, real estate agents and insurance agents who teach participants about their specific field of expertise.

The August class will be held in three sessions Aug. 4, 11 and 18. Registration is required. To register, call 259-1418.
