The Man to Man Prostate Cancer support group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 1 at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

Anyone with prostate issues or prostate cancer is urged to attend. Additionally, the group will discuss its November participation in the Life Long Learning Series at Fort Lewis College.

Daybreak Rotary Club to meet Sept. 2

The Durango Daybreak Rotary Club will meet from 6:45 to 8 a.m. Sept. 2 at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

Sue Palmer will discuss the work of the Friendship Force, a nonprofit started in 1977 by Jimmy Carter as a cultural exchange organization promoting friendship and goodwill through a program of home stay exchanges.

Homebuyer education class is available

The Regional Housing Alliance of La Plata County offers a free monthly Homebuyer Education Class.

The class is an eight-hour program designed to help participants purchase and own a home. Topics will include: buyer readiness; budget/financial management; credit reports and scoring; mortgage lending; working with a real estate agent; homeowners insurance; home inspections; the closing process; home maintenance; and foreclosure prevention. The class is facilitated by the Regional Housing Alliance with contributions from local professionals such as loan officers, real estate agents and insurance agents who teach participants about their specific field of expertise.

Adult education center seeks volunteers

The Durango Adult Education Center will host a volunteer informational meeting from 6 to 7 p.m. Sept. 9 at the center, 701 Camino del Rio, Suite 301.

People interested in volunteering for the 2015-16 school year are asked to attend this brief meeting before volunteering to see specific program information and what positions are available.

As a nonprofit, the center relies on volunteers to help administer its programs. Volunteers are needed to assist in GED and ESL classes and with special projects and fundraisers. Volunteers interested in working with students are requested to have previous teaching experience.

Free mulch, loading Saturday in Bayfield

The La Plata County yard waste collection site, located at the Bayfield Convenience Center at 4496 County Road 223, has been collecting and mulching yard waste.

Beginning on Saturday, this mulch will be available to residents free of charge. Loading also will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Saturday’s event.

Trash services will not be open or available during this time.
