Vallecito Dam closed to pedestrians
Vallecito Dam, located near Bayfield, will be closed to pedestrian traffic through Oct. 7 for public safety, according to the Bureau of Reclamation.
The closure is necessary to install vehicle barriers and boulders at both ends of Vallecito Dam. The construction work will involve heavy equipment, concrete and open excavations. Construction fencing and appropriate signs will be installed.
In addition to the dam closure, parking lots on either side of the dam will be closed for construction access, staging materials and equipment. A 4-foot opening will remain between the barriers and boulders for future pedestrian, horse, all-terrain vehicle and snowplow access.

Prescribed burns planned near Dolores
The Bureau of Land Management’s Tres Rios Field Office plans to begin several prescribed burns as early as this week, or as conditions allow.
The prescribed burns will treat 509 acres of ponderosa pine and Gambel oak.
The West Rim Pines Project includes 20 separate units – all located about seven miles east of Dove Creek, on BLM-managed lands. Crews anticipate introducing fire to three units as early as Thursday. The prescribed burns are anticipated up to three days, with an additional two days of monitoring both burns once completed to ensure public safety.
While smoke may be visible in the area at times during the burns, most of the smoke will lift and dissipate during the warmest parts of the day. Smoke may be visible in the area for several days after each burn is completed as vegetation in the interior of the burn continues to smolder.
