The Southwest Colorado Small Business Development Center invites the public to meet its new executive director, Liz Ross, from noon to 1 p.m. Monday at the Cortez Chamber of Commerce, 31 Main St., in Cortez.
Ross comes to the center from the University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Management.
She will share information about the programs, services and training sessions the center offers to small businesses in Montezuma County.
In particular, she will outline the upcoming Leading Edge Strategic Planning Series scheduled for late winter 2016.
The class is for people contemplating starting a business, new owners and managers or existing businesses.
The basics of running a business will be discussed, including accounting, marketing, budgets and human-resource items.
Veterans committee to serve breakfast
Durango Elks Lodge Veterans Committee will serve breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. the first and third Sundays of the month at the lodge, 901 East Second Ave.
Participants should use the Ninth Street entrance. The cost is $5 for veterans and $6 for non-veterans.
Civic engagement to be discussed
The Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive, will host the National Center for Learning and Civic Engagement from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The group will hold a 90-minute focus group in the community rooms to discuss how to improve civic life for young people in the Bayfield area.
A light lunch will be provided by the library.
Community members of all ages are encouraged to participate in the discussion.

Latino celebration coming to Bayfield
The Pine River Library has received a grant from the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities to host a series of programs about Latino history.
The programs will bring together Latinos and other community members to discuss opportunities for the library to collaborate and work with the Latino population.
The first event will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the community room at the library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive, in Bayfield.
There will be music and dinner catered by Chavolos. The event is free to all community members.

Church accepting grant applications
The Mission Endowment Fund Committee of Christ the King Lutheran Church is accepting grant applications for projects that support the mission of Christ the King.
The mission is “to love and serve God by proclaiming Christ’s gospel, strengthening worship, deepening discipleship and serving our congregation, community and world.”

Archaeological group to meet Nov. 12
