The Rocky Mountain Region of the U.S. Forest Service announces that it will be advertising more than 600 temporary positions throughout the region’s national forests and grasslands starting Jan. 7.
Temporary positions are available in a variety of occupations such as fire, trails, forestry, engineering, wildlife, recreation, fisheries, archeology and administrative support. Job seekers can apply for temporary jobs during these time frames:
Jan. 7-14 for wildland fire positions and other early season, non-fire temporary positions.
Early February for most non-fire temporary positions in recreation, fisheries, forestry, engineering, etc.
Early March for remaining positions.

Ballet Folklorico enrollment has begun
The traditional Mexican dance group Ballet Folklorico de Durango has begun enrollment.
Youth and adult classes are offered for all levels and abilities, and new dancers from any background are welcome. Youth ages 5 to 18 and community members of any age may enroll through El Centro at Fort Lewis College.
The cost is $60 per dancer for the term. Enroll two siblings and the second child is half-price. FLC students pay no fee. All practices are held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mondays at FLC’s El Centro Room 40 of the Student Union.
Costumes are available for performers who don’t have their own. All dancers must participate in some fundraising activities to supplement program costs. Scholarships are available for students with financial needs, and donations to assist the scholarship program and Ballet Folklorico de Durango can be mailed to the FLC Foundation office.

Great Decisions group to meet
Great Decisions, an international affairs discussion group, sponsored nationally by the Foreign Policy Association and organized locally by the Durango Public Library, the League of Women Voters of La Plata County and the local chapter of American Association of University Women will hold its first session from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Jan. 12 at the library, 1900 East Third Ave.
That day’s topic will be Middle East Alliances, led by Katherine Burgess. All discussions are moderated by interested community members.
The Great Decisions discussions are free and open to the public. Attendees are invited to bring a sack lunch. The discussions will be held every other Tuesday through April 19. The Winter 2016 program will include the following topics:
The Rise of ISIS on Jan. 26.
The Future of Kurdistan on Feb. 9.
Migration on Feb. 23.
The Koreas on March 8.
The United Nations on March 22.
Climate Change on April 5.
Cuba and the U.S. on April 19.
Each discussion session includes a video on the topic. A book on the various topics, prepared by the Foreign Policy Association, is available for $25 by sending a check made out to LWVLPC and mailed to Janice C. Sheftel, 35 Animas Place, Durango, CO 81031. Books should arrive by the end of December. Purchasers will be notified to pick up their books at the library reference desk, second floor.
Thrive! Living Wage Coalition to meet
The Thrive! Living Wage Coalition will meet Monday in the Commons Building, 701 Camino del Rio on the third floor.
Meetings are open to the public. The group will hear updates from 5:30 to 6 p.m., followed by a potluck dinner from 6 to 6:30 p.m., and brainstorming, problem-solving and strategy will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
