The Ignacio Community Library recently received a grant from the Ballantine Foundation to support the Voices of Ignacio Oral History Project.

The goals of the project are to collect and preserve the interrelated stories of the community and to build a shared pride in Ignacio’s history through storytelling.

The Ballantine Foundation grant will fund the purchase of recording and archiving equipment and software, transcription services, volunteer stipends and honorariums to the project collaborators, Kristine Navarro-McElhaney, from Arizona State University, and Josh Salyers, from the University of Arizona and Fort Lewis College.

Throughout the term of the grant, the Ignacio Community Library will ask community members to have their stories recorded. The library is working with project collaborators and community volunteers. A culminating exhibition will highlight area residents’ lives and stories.
