Widespread outbreaks of conscience bring together huge crowds to protest systemic racism and police abuse of power. Leaving the safety of their homes, these folks show up, recognizing their responsibility as citizens, friends and community members. Those in the streets protesting state-sponsored terror include some privileged by our class system alongside those who know the daily fear lived by people of color. Our protesters are our moral compass, committed to equality and universal protection under the law.
I grieve deeply for George Floyd and the long list of mothers, brothers, uncles and daughters murdered before him by my country, and for the vacuum of conscience in those who condone such violence. I am also proud of the America I hope for, of deep understanding, moral empathy and civic responsibility. Those who protest wrongs give me hope for this dangerous, torch-wielding country.
