The Glenwood Springs Post Independent reports that traffic was bumper-to-bumper into the evening Monday following the demolition of the Grand Avenue Bridge along Colorado Highway 82 earlier in the day.

Officials want to cut the number of vehicles traveling through the city by a third during the three months of construction, the largest infrastructure project in western Colorado in 25 years.

A spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Transportation, Tracy Trulove, said many drivers reported seeing lots of single drivers on the detour route on the first day.
