Illuminating a Christmas tradition

Luminarias circle Fassbinder Park and outline the playground on Christmas Eve. Volunteer Meredith Mapel, who lives in the neighborhood, estimated 1,000 festive Christmas decorations festoon the park. Neighbors along East Third Avenue also placed luminarias from just south of Third Street and north to 15th Street, averaging about 100 per block.
