The article mentions the La Plata County Register of Historic Places, and as chairman of the La Plata County Historical Commission, I wanted to explain that we are a committee reporting to the La Plata County commissioners, and we welcome applications from property owners, private and federal, to list sites significant to our area’s history. The county register is more than just an archives list.
To be on the list requires research, a completed nomination, a vote from the commission and final approval by the county commissioners. Once on the list, properties have more distinction, and property owners may receive financial assistance from the State Historic Fund, which this year will generate about $9 million.
We welcome additions to the list, and we hope that the LaBoca, Tiffany and Thompson Park Cemeteries will be new additions.
