Colorado Department of Transportation must have more money than it knows what to do with. This can of worms is the biggest waste of taxpayer money since the famous Bridge to Nowhere. First there was the one interchange. Red, green, a directional arrow or two, etc. It worked! Now to go south on U.S. 550 from downtown, you encounter two signals: the original one and then, a few feet further, another red light to accommodate the idiot crossover to westbound U.S. 160. It is only a matter of time before there will be a horrific head-on collision.
By the same token, those who want to go west on 160 must first stop at the crossover point, go west to the original intersection and stop again for a second signal. The only gain is for those going north on 550 from the south. Hurray: at last, continuous flow.
From one signal light to three doesn’t sound very efficient, plus spending millions to provide a bulletproof barrier to ward off the invading South American children on the way from Arizona – at least that is what it looks like.
Wouldn’t it have been great if they had looked at the total scene and realized that Highway 172 to the airport is a death trap? A narrow two-lane road with minimal shoulders and too high a speed limit, and is a main entrance to the city. Those millions would have done wonders out there.
How about Highway 550 from Bondad, extending the four lane? At least the money, as far as would have reached, would have also have done some good. Also Wilson Gulch to give the bridge an excuse for being there?
For this you need an engineering college education?
