Alena Alvarez and her dog Gil have their photo taken with Santa Claus on Saturday during the La Plata County Humane Society’s Pet Photos with Santa fundraiser at Creature Comforts. Gil is a paraplegic dog from Arizona who was shot at point-blank on the San Carlos Reservation. The young pup’s underside had been ravaged from crawling across the ground, and he suffered gastrointestinal issues. His outlook looked grim, and the family who found him surrendered Gil to a local veterinarian. Gil was likely to face euthanasia, but was eventually saved and adopted by Alvarez who lives in Red Mesa, south La Plata County. (Jerry McBride/Durango Herald)
