Jennifer Sierra, a volunteer, prepares a tree for its next home on Saturday, Dec, 9, 2023, at the San Juan Mountains Association Christmas tree lot in the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad parking lot. This year, it started off with 500 white fir trees that were cut from the forest at Beaver Meadows east of Durango and 500 balsam fir trees from Wisconsin. The money raised from sales goes to education and stewardship programs and is the biggest fundraiser of the year for SJMA. Wreaths made by staff members, volunteers and local artisans are also available. The lot will be open until 6 p.m. Sunday for its last scheduled day, and then a couple of days next week that will be determined later. (Jerry McBride/Durango Herald)
