A lot of smoke but no fire was discovered at 221 Jenkins Ranch Road around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. Laura Rickard, who lives next door, heard the smoke alarm and went to investigate. Rickard said she saw lots of smoke in the kitchen and heard the neighbor’s dog barking so she called in the fire. Durango Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Jeff Harris, the incident commander, says firefighters found a pot left on the stove. No one was home, and the dog had retreated to the upper floor of the home and was OK, Harris said.
