Fire officials urge visitors to use caution with fire in the backcountry:

Put out campfires completely every time you leave camp. Pour water on the ashes and stir until there is no smoke, and ashes are cool to the touch. Consider using a camp stove.Dispose of cigarette butts in a safe and appropriate container.Make sure chainsaws have working spark arresters, and carry water, a shovel, and fire extinguisher when cutting firewood.Park vehicles in areas clear of vegetation, not over dry grasses. For more information, contact the San Juan Public Lands Center, 970 247-4874.
