A newly dug trench running from top to bottom of Chapman Hill doesn’t have anything to do with the upcoming ski season; rather, it was dug to lay a fiber-optic line for a private company.

Richardson Construction laid the fiber line for fiber-optic company Vero. Mark Jenkins with Richardson Construction said all the trenching work is done, and the hillside scar will be reseeded Nov. 22.

“It’s a new fiber route,” he said. “It’s connecting two different parts of the fiber that is existing in town. Part of it is for Vero, and then there’s a spare line in there for the city.”

Jenkins said his crew first attempted to bore a hole up the hill, but that proved unsuccessful.

“We ended up having to trench it, so we just dug a trench from the top down to the bottom,” he said. “We put the pipe in and covered it back over.”

Jenkins said the Vero line will provide a better connection between Verizon Wireless Network towers.
