The record Sheriff Schirard has established speaks for itself. He is no more a “Yosemite Sam” than Jim Fuge (Letters, Herald, May 24) is a “Bugs Bunny.” The state Legislature (not the people of Colorado) has chosen to pass some gun-related laws that are unenforceable. Our sheriff and his staff have much more important work to do to keep the people of La Plata County safe than trying to enforce such laws.
Legislators seem to forget that they are elected to represent the people, not to carry out their personal or party agendas. Attempting to enforce such unenforceable, “feel-good” laws requires law-enforcement agencies to take resources away from what is truly important to the people they have sworn to serve and protect.
Sheriff Schirard is taking action to overturn these laws, which is his right as a resident of the state of Colorado. He has stated that no taxpayer money is involved in his efforts. There is no reason not to believe that statement. In the end, it is the people of La Plata County who will determine what is right or wrong for La Plata County, not legislators. And future elections will determine the will of the people.
