Exploring space is a little easier for local residents this month through a special exhibit at Ignacio Community Library.

Explore Space: A Cosmic Journey, features a display and several special events through Oct. 21 for space enthusiasts of all ages.

Last month, fourth-grade students from Alison deKay’s class at Ignacio Elementary School visited the library to see it.

“It’s pretty cool,” Moriah Ashley said of the exhibit. One of the interesting facts she learned is Saturn’s rings aren’t solid, but are made up of dust, particles of ice, and big boulders.

Playing a simulated game of space golf, and designing your own planet on a computer, got a big thumbs up from Kaylee McCoy, Addison Kremer and Ethan Valencia.

One of the most popular aspects of the display is a low-tech favorite: a homemade rocket ship made out of cardboard. Kids jammed into it to set off on their journey to space.

The exhibit concludes with three special events this month:

International Observe the Moon Night, 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, an annual worldwide public event that encourages observation, appreciation and understanding of the moon.Explore Space from Your Computer, 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11. Learn all the ways to learn about space from a computer, tablet, or phone.Finding the Goldilocks Zone, 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18. Hunt for alien Earth-like planets in far off galaxies. This can be done by looking for the habitable zone, or Goldilocks Zone, where conditions are right for liquid water.
