It appears the city knee-jerked the decision based on vocal objections from some members of the public. If the city is really representing all Durango residents, it should have gathered the facts prior to making a decision. These facts would verify the Gun Club is required to have 100 percent NRA membership in order to receive funds from the NRA. The city should have found out how much NRA money was at stake, how it would be used and how it would benefit the citizens of our city and county.
My real point in writing is to thank the Herald for a most fair and thoughtful description of the NRA. One would not know from most media sources the NRA is made up of multiple groups – including education, training for youth and law enforcement – and helps fund safe shooting facilities. The legislative arm gets all the media attention and, as the Herald points out, even some gun owners think the legislative part of the NRA crosses the line at times.
I expect members of the Durango Gun Club took some time to explain to the Herald the full story of the NRA. Nevertheless, the Herald no doubt verified what was explained to them and then published a more complete and fair picture of what the NRA is, and I thank you for that.
