The city received free technical assistance through SolSmart to receive the designation, and a SolSmart team member from Colorado Solar Energy Industries Association helped evaluate a photovoltaic system installation.

SolSmart, launched in 2016, is led by the Solar Foundation and International City and County Management Association, and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy SunShot Initiative.
