Admission is one non-perishable food item for the food bank. Donations are accepted for extra rehearsal studio rental, support of cultural study in Durango and visiting master teacher travel costs.
Durango Hula Ohana has danced together in Durango since 2014. The group offers a Ho’ike every year. Last year’s Ho’ike raised money for group leader Ananda Foley to pursue an artist-in-residency in North Kohala, where she spent 12 days studying with a master teacher.
Tonight’s Ho’ike will share dances and aspects of how the residency has influenced the group this year. Hula is the language of the Hawaiian people and the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people. The stories encoded in the songs and chants carry the history and the legends that define the Hawaiian culture. The dances express the storytelling embedded in the songs.
