Just before 8 a.m., workers at Mercury witnessed an episode of “Wild Kingdom” right outside their headquarters along the Animas River: A bald eagle appeared to land on a rock, but on closer inspection, it turned out to be the end of the hunt, with the lucky eagle finishing off an unfortunate duck. Hank Blum says he was not sure if the talons provided the coup de grâce or whether the poor water fowl drowned in the struggle.
