Am I part of the “they”? You know, the “they” of the so-called “radical left” whom certain Republican figures are blaming for causing our collective downfall?
I believe in free markets and free trade. Does that make me a conservative, a Republican?I believe in a strong defense of our democracy. Again, am I a conservative, a Republican?I believe that overregulation of industry in some sectors has led to stagnation and higher costs.I believe in freedom of speech.I believe that the government should stay out of my private choices about religion, sex and which books, papers or media I consume.I believe in the rule of law – for everyone.I believe in telling the truth.I believe policymakers should understand statistics if they want to make scientific pronouncements and decisions.I believe in free and fair elections for all citizens.I believe in the American dream of providing equality of opportunity.I believe in fairness; the government shouldn’t pick winners and losers in business.I believe that making policy decisions in government is complicated. Issues have gray areas. To move forward, we often need to compromise.I believe in listening to those with whom I don’t agree.
So, you can call me a liberal/libertarian/conservative patriot if you like, but don’t call me “they” just because I may disagree with you. And, I won’t call you “they” either. Maybe then we can start listening and talking.
