“Durango lost a big cadre of seniors last year and we have been able to find some excellent replacements in a strong group of underclassmen,” DHS head coach David McMillan said in an email to The Durango Herald. “Despite having to shovel the track a few times in the past two weeks, and with a severe shortage of practice time for the field events, the Demons performed above expectation across the board.”
The DHS girls, in particular, dominated the field events, with first-place finishes from Jessica Lee, pole vault; Alli Davis, high jump and long jump; and Bree Hawman, shot put. Also finishing first for the DHS girls were Abby Scott, 800 meters; Shannon Maloney, 1,600 meters; and the sprint medley relay team of Miranda Gallegos, Lee, Davis and Maloney.
DHS made it a double in the pole vault with Justin Marcum finishing first in the boys division. Also winning events for the DHS boys were Benjamin Lachelt in the 3,200 meters and the 4×400 relay team of David Moenning, Bryan Dunlop, Seamus Millett and Marcum.
