The man killed in a motorcycle accident Saturday afternoon has been identified as John Duncan “J.D.” Graham of Pagosa Springs.

Graham was killed on U.S. Highway 160 about 35 miles east of Durango while traveling eastbound in a group of four. Cpl. Heather Cobler of the Colorado State Patrol said he failed to negotiate a turn, crossed the oncoming lane of traffic and went off the left side of the road.

Graham was killed on his 65th birthday. A decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, he had served Archuleta County as a deputy and investigator, was active in search-and-rescue, served as a Colorado Mounted Ranger and later worked for the Colorado Department of Transportation on Wolf Creek Pass.

For the past 15 years, he and his wife, Judy, had owned and operated Wolf Creek Trucking.

In addition to his wife, Graham is survived by four children; his mother, Edith Graham of Fort Collins; 11 grandchildren and seven siblings.

Cobler said no one in the group was wearing a helmet. She said troopers were investigating the possibility alcohol played a role. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
