The National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds was recently informed that the La Plata County Building Department has closed down the only handicapped accessible campground cabins in the Vallecito Recreational District. The reasoning was that cabins were not permitted under the campgrounds land-use permit. The fact that the campground had gone to considerable effort and expense in renovating existing buildings to provide such accommodations for a limited number of special needs guests had no bearing on the matter.
This seeming indifference to those with special needs, especially veterans who have sacrificed so much, is not the type of national publicity a tourist-oriented economy needs or should be promulgating. It would appear that La Plata County government is more a rulebook-oriented bureaucracy rather than embracing the creed of government of the people, by the people, for the people.
