I was led to believe progressives were tolerant of different viewpoints. That said, perhaps Harrigan can explain why people who are critical of the president’s incompetent handling of even the simplest tasks are racists. Yet, progressives get a free ride when they refer to Condi Rice, Dr. Ben Carson and Justice Clarence Thomas as “Oreos” or “Uncle Toms.”
Perhaps Harrigan is unaware the liberal County Commissioner from the 3rd district couldn’t even carry her own district, yet was elected with votes from the city of Durango. Many cities have banned plastic bags. And it probably would have worked here in Durango if the City Council had not taken an arrogant “progressive” attitude that ‘We-know-what’s-good-for-you.’
Finally, I would direct Harrigan to read the text of former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s May 29 commencement speech at Harvard. Consider this quote: “There is an idea floating around college campuses – including here at Harvard – that scholars should be funded only if their work conforms to a particular view of justice. There’s a word for that idea: censorship. And it is just a modern-day form of McCarthyism.” He went on to point out that of the contributions from the Ivy League faculty and employees, 96 percent went to Barrack Obama. “There was more disagreement among the old Soviet Politburo than there is among Ivy League donors.” He went on to say, “Liberals silenced a voice – and denied an honorary degree – to individuals they deemed politically objectionable. That is an outrage, and we must not let it continue.”
In spite of Harrigan’s rants and unsigned letters I’ve received that echo his views, I shall continue to point out that there are conservative voices in the community who deserve the same respect he seeks for his views.
