While reading a story about the Durango Film Festival (Herald, March 3), I was shocked to see it used the term “red-headed stepchildren” as a derogatory example of people or institutions not being treated fairly.
What a bunch of crap.
Is this the accepted alternative to using the term “nappy headed ho,” over which a very famous talk show host was fired? Please enlighten your so-called journalists not to use such offensive terms.
I happen to be a redhead who does not appreciate this type of comparison because No. 1, it is not true, and No. 2, it contributes to the bullying that everyone who does not have their head in the sand knows what goes on in this country.
I guess a small-town newspaper is not going to have seasoned professionals working for it, but I would expect the editor to have some experience.
I will think twice next time I go to the store to purchase a newspaper.
