Plastic bags are already recycled in bins provided by grocery stores. I have long disagreed with one grocer that only provides boxes if you forget a bag. Cardboard and newspaper items do not decompose quickly in a landfill. It has been found while digging in landfills that old newspapers dating back 25 years are still readable.
I find it interesting that grocers would have to do this, while other municipalities do not have such a foolish ban. There are other ways to legislate conservation other than charging 10 cents per bag for purchases in grocery stores in Durango. We hear no such discussion in Phoenix. For the taxes paid in Durango, the city should provide reusable totes that can be used for grocers and other retailers. Having lived 17 years in Durango, I see many other issues that should be of greater concern. Are you going to let a few people dictate to the masses? Remember at election time who backed this measure and who didn’t.
