Plastic grocery bags are a made-in-America product – something that we should all support. Plastic grocery bags require 70 percent less energy to manufacture than paper bags. Their production consumes less than 4 percent of the water needed to make paper bags. It takes seven trucks to deliver the same number of paper bags that it takes to transport plastic bags in only one truck. But the most offensive component of this attempt to raise taxes is the lack of compassion it demonstrates for lower income, seniors, and the middle-class families of Durango. Does anyone believe that today’s charge of 10 cents per bag will not escalate to, say, 50 cents a bag?
Can residents trust a City Council that is so absorbed in its political agenda that it focuses on generating taxes instead of generating more tourism? The community wants government leadership to enhance Durango as a place to visit, not to harass seniors, families and visitors with needless costs that do nothing to enhance the environment. I encourage residents to visit nodurangobagtax.com for additional information.
