I have seen some cemeteries that are maintained by volunteers and, believe me, we do not want that. As much as families want to care for the grounds, it never seems to work well. Eventually, the cemetery develops that uncared-for look. We now have a really nice cemetery, one of the nicest I have ever seen, if not the nicest. That is mostly because of the tax revenue being administered by the directors of the Pine River Cemetery District in an appropriate and efficient manner. We are fortunate to have an experienced board of directors and they are doing a super job; however, tax revenue at this point is being stretched pretty darned thin since property valuation has declined so much in the last two or three years and expenses have gotten so high. The present mill levy is not going to be enough.
This small increase is not going to be hard on anyone. We all probably have enough change around the house right now to more than cover it for the entire year.
Bayfield has an attractive and new town hall, a new senior center, a beautiful library, nice school buildings and lovely parks. Let’s keep up that tradition by taking good care of our cemetery.
Vote “yes” on the last issue on the ballot, Number 5D.
