Deputies stopped the vehicle near mile marker 67, north of Molas Lake. The highway was closed as a result of the investigation and reopened around 10 a.m. Tuesday, according to CoTrip.org.
The Sheriff’s Office declined calls from the media, so it’s unclear what transpired after the vehicle was stopped.
The Facebook post says the female driver ultimately died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Undersheriff Steve Lowrance was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center “with facial wounds received while trying to prevent the driver from her actions,” according to the Facebook post.
Lowrance was in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery, the Sheriff’s Office said.
According to the post, two passengers in the vehicle were taken into custody and taken to the La Plata County Jail.
The Sheriff’s Office said it is not yet releasing names of those involved.
San Juan County Sheriff Bruce Conrad, when contacted late Tuesday, said the Colorado Bureau of Investigation is taking over the incident.
“We will have no further (comment) except that Undersheriff Lowrance is home and upset I won’t let him work,” Conrad said.
Audrey Simkins, a CBI spokeswoman, said the agency would not release any additional information about the incident Tuesday.
The incident and subsequent investigation closed Highway 550 between Silverton and Purgatory Resort for an estimated five hours. CDOT spokeswoman Lisa Schwantes said the road was closed around 4 a.m. Tuesday.
