LPEA election packets available March 17
Election packets for people interested in running for a seat on the La Plata Electric Association board of directors will be available March 17 at LPEA offices in Durango and Pagosa Springs and www.lpea.coop.
To be placed on the ballot, candidates must return completed petitions to either LPEA office by 1 p.m. April 7. LPEA’s offices are at 45 Stewart St., Durango and 603 S. Eighth St., Pagosa Springs. One-third of the directors’ seats are up for election annually, one in each of LPEA’s four districts. Candidates are required to be permanent residents of the district they seek to represent and be members in good standing of the cooperative throughout their term in office. Completed election petitions must contain 15 or more signatures from co-op members in a candidate’s district. A map of LPEA’s voting districts is available on the cooperative’s website under “Your Co-op – Districts.” Directors are elected for three-year terms, and they are not term-limited. Ballots will be mailed to the membership May 1 with results announced at LPEA’s annual meeting May 22 at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.

County resident elected to workforce board
Tish Nelson, a longtime La Plata County resident, has been elected chairwoman of the Southwest Colorado Workforce Investment Board.
Nelson is the education coordinator for the Pine River Community Learning Center in Ignacio and also a consultant with Education Edge Now. She has a degree from Fort Lewis College and a master’s in education from Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass. Nelson previously worked as a teacher for both the Bayfield and Ignacio school districts, and she and her husband have raised three sons in the area.
The Southwest Colorado Workforce Region is part of the Colorado Rural Workforce Consortium, one of nine federally designated workforce areas in the state. Time to report taxable property
The La Plata County assessor reminds owners of taxable personal property (furnishings, equipment and household furnishing used to produce income) the deadline for filing a declaration schedule is April 15.
Owners of personal property with a total actual value greater than $7,000 per county are required to report the personal property to the county assessor. Failure to declare personal property each year by the deadline will result in the assessor valuing property using the “best information available” and attaching a penalty to the tax bill. People who did not receive a declaration schedule may request one from the county assessor or submit a complete itemized listing of the property.

Names are sought for downtown events
The Durango Business Improvement District, as part of its reorganization of the BID marketing campaigns, which promote events in and around Durango, is seeking creative suggestions from community members, with downtown gift cards awarded to those selected for their winning titles.
In 2014, the BID will launch four seasonal marketing promotions, all under the heading of “What’s Happening Durango.” The title beneath the over-arching heading would reflect the event period. Community members are asked to submit their ideas – one to four words each – that speak to the essence of events held during May, June and July; August, September and October; and February, March and April. Region 9 announces addition to its board
The Region 9 Economic Development District of Southwest Colorado announces the addition of Tom Atencio to its board of directors.
Atencio is a native of Ignacio and serves as the Ignacio representative along with Town Manager Lee San Miguel as the alternate. Atencio attended Fort Lewis College and Adams State College and received a degree in elementary education. He taught school for six years but has spent the last 34 years working in the gas-and-oil industry. He was elected to the Town Board in 1979 and served for one year before relocating for his job. He returned to Ignacio in 2008 and was again elected to the Town Board in 2012 for a two-year term.
