There are many nonprofits who are worthy of taxpayer support, but the NRA (through subsidized leases with the county and the city) is not one of them. Since the Sandy Hook shooting of first graders, there have been 44 school shootings, yet the NRA aggressively pushes policies that offend the sensibilities of most people. You may recall that George H.W. Bush resigned his membership to the NRA in 1995.

As the current chairwoman of the La Plata County Democratic Party, I am always cognizant of the fact that my views are not necessarily representative of all Democrats, and because of that, I am very often reluctant to speak to the press. To have a statement that many people may consider a comparison of the Boys & Girls Club to the NRA inaccurately attributed to me reinforces that reluctance.
