The new rules for labeling do not go into effect until February 2015. In addition, here are some steps to take for safety from Jim Spratlen, chief of the Durango Police Department:

Talk to children about not eating any food products not sealed or until an adult has a chance to inspect it. Parents and teens should carefully inspect labels to make sure they are known brand names, as a lot of marijuana edibles have look-alike brand names.

Parents should accompany their children while they are walking around collecting treats and make sure they don’t stay out too late.

Please offer only pre-packaged goodies, not any homemade goodies. Chief Spratlen says there will be extra patrols on Halloween to help.
